PoE, power and protection
How to calculate a PoE power budget
Calculate a PoE power budget for cameras, access points and network devices without undersizing the switch or injector.
Add the maximum consumption
Use the maximum consumption of each device, not only its typical consumption. Add all loads and keep headroom for cable loss, device startup and future expansion.
- Confirm how many devices will be powered at the same time.
- Check both per-port power and the switch total budget.
- Keep at least 20% headroom where possible.
Confirm the PoE standard
PoE, PoE+ and PoE++ are not equivalent. The powered device and switch port must support compatible standards, while some older devices use passive PoE at a specific voltage.
- Do not connect passive PoE without confirming voltage.
- Check network cable length and quality.
- Use surge protection for outdoor links.
Data needed to compare products
Send the models and quantities of cameras, access points or radios. This makes it possible to select the correct switch, injector and protection without buying unnecessary capacity.
